And yes.. On 6/30 WE have been graced with a new guy.. Dagger

His story yet to unfold.

DUMAS,
OUR POLISH IMPORT
DOBERMAN!!!

We lost Riggins to Cancer, and Dexter to the Train on Labor Day....  We were all so sad..

Dumas was the greatest.. and he had the greatest Heart..

On June 19, 2009 at his regular checkup - not yet 6 years old.. He died suddenly at my feet while we waited for the vet - Linda.

It was a huge shock..  Enjoy his story below.  -

Dumas came to us in September, 2004 we got a miracle..
OLAF from Poland.

Our good Friend Gunter in Germany.. Who felt so bad we had lost Dexter..Found and gifted OLAF to us direct from Poland.

Olaf, from a litter of 12 (6 females and 6 males) was offered by a wonderful polish breeder.  I selected him from baby pictures on the breeder's website.  He was just 2 weeks old.

So -- At 8 weeks -- Olaf flew via Poland to the USA and arrived in Rochester, NY just days before Thanksgiving.

Finally out here.. the long trip to JFK then Atlanta on Delta,
and at 11pm to Rochester International, NY.

A trip monitored by Happy Trails of AZ.. who made sure Olaf was met, fed, walked, and well prepared for the journey.

So how does one get a Polish Doberman Puppy to America???
There are steps.. of course.. and Wanda the breeder had to provide information, and Gunter, bless his heart, had to provide funds.  It cost $500 Euro for the transportation air fair to JFK, and $225 more Euros for his paperwork / veterinary history to be translated from Polish to English for USA Customs.  Also Olaf needed an approved transportation crate, and Rabies documentation.  There no quarantine required, but you do need paperwork.. and you especially need an agency to Greet the Pet.

This is where Bridget, president of Happy Tails Travel came into to the picture.  Her team (at the cost of a house payment) met Olaf - Dumas at Customs in JFK, provided the necessary paperwork so he was admitted to the USA.  (Pups are not required in NYS to have rabbie certificate until 11 weeks old - so Olaf required some special health certificate.)  Her group of agents then escorted OLAF to a Veterinarian for a check up, made sure he was boarded overnight, fed, walked, and transported to his next flight to Atlanta, where he was again boarded, fed, walked, and then escorted to the Delta Terminal for his final flight to Rochester, NY.

Bridget and her Happy Tails Travel staff followed Olaf's trip.. and notified me as to his flight status and estimated arrival time.

If you have to move a pet.. I highly recommend them!!!

Heck -- Olaf has traveled more air miles
than I have in the past 20 years.

With Keith -- At midnight.. finally a time to sleep.

(The guy who said.. I don't want a puppy... Right???)

Next Morning.. sunlight!

Day 2

Thanks Gunter.. for the love of a great pet!

And Then.. there was great sadness.
6/19/09  He was off to his regular checkup.  We talk a long brisk walk in the am.. On this trail I cut through the field.. just for us.  Dumas was a big, strong, muscular dobbie.  He pulled me through the fields.. and i had a hard time keeping up.  In the afternoon, we did another short walk.. and he got in the Tracker with me for the 8 mile drive to the Vets.  He has had the same vet since he came to me on that great flight.  I got him on the scale.. and he peaked at 100.2 pounds.. WOW!  Well he did love his tuna fish.  WE sat down to wait.. Dumas really did not like the fabric muzzle, be he could be a handful when he wanted to be.  He smelt the bags of cat food on display, and he stood next to me, and I rubbed his head and his eyes.  It was almost time to go in and see Linda the vet.  And Dumas laid down, at my feet, and i rubbed his head.  He lowered his head down, out of my reach.  Linda came out of the office and said.. oh.. he brought me a fresh stool sample too.. and I looked down, where Dumas laid, head held up by his front feet.  I said in a shocked voice, "Oh NO."

His head rolled over, when he collapsed to a side.  As Linda Quickly listened for his heart, looked at his face - I pulled off the muzzle.

His heart had stopped.. she tried cpr -- but he was gone.

And I cried.

I brought him home.. and lays to rest .. on the edge of the Woods he loved to dart in and run about.. not far from Tige my cat, Dokken Dobbie, and Riggins.

You can't imagine the grief.  It was Fast, It was Sudden.. and i miss him more than you can know.

He is buried with his favorite Yellow ducks, his tennis balls, and his blue whoopie.

At night.. i hug the penguin that he cuddled with.

He was the greatest gift i have ever been given.. and It is more that quiet.

I love you Dumas-- even more than you knew.
